What information do I need to complete a self assessment?

You’ll need various documents to complete your Self Assessment tax return, such as:

  • Income records (payslips, P60s)
  • Bank interest statements
  • Rental income details

Self Assessment tax return deadlines

Deadline What you need to do
5 October Register for Self Assessment if you need to file for the previous tax year
31 October Submit a paper tax return
31 January Submit an online tax return and pay tax owed
31 January Pay the first payment on account, where applicable
31 July Pay the second payment on account, where applicable

Self Assessment and Making Tax Digital for Income Tax


MTD for Income Tax started on 6 April 2026. It initially applies to sole traders and landlords with qualifying income above £50,000

  • The threshold reduces to £30,000 from April 2027
  • It reduces again to £20,000 from April 2028
  • MTD does not simply replasce Self Assessment overnight
  • Taxpayers joining MTD still need to submit their tax return for the previous tax year
  • Quarterly updates are submitted using compatible software

HMRC confirms that the £20,000 threshold applies from 6 April 2028, based on qualifying income for 2026/27.

Penalties for late self assessment tax return

  • One day late: Automatic penalty of £100, regardless of tax owed.
  • Three months late: £10 per day, up to a maximum of £900.
  • Six months late: Penalty of £300 or 5% of the tax due, whichever is higher.
  • Twelve months late: Additional £300 or 5% of the tax due, whichever is higher.
  • Deliberate concealment: Higher penalties may apply for withholding information.
