National minimum wage is the minimum amount per hour most of the UK workers should get depending upon their age or if they are an apprentice. If you are a working resident of UK and your age is 25 years or more, you are entitled for national minimum wage. It is applicable to almost all UK workers except self-employed persons and some other workers.

Calculation of National minimum wage
Before calculating national minimum wage, you should understand the meaning of “Pay reference period”. Pay reference period is a period of time you are actually paid for. For example – if you are paid weekly, your pay reference period is one week and if you are paid monthly, your pay reference period is one month. Pay reference period cannot be longer than 31 days. It also includes the other pay which you earned during the end of that period but not received until next month. For ex – Overtime done by a person in the month of July but he is receiving the same in august will be counted in the month of July pay only.
