Opening a Bank Account with Barclays:

Documents & ID proof required to Open Bank Account at Barclays

If you’re applying for an account with Barclays bank, you'll need to carry 2 valid, original documents at the branch in which you want to open a bank account. Keep in mind that you’ll require to show separate documents to verify your identity and your address each. Single ID proof to verify ID and address both will not fulfill the asked requirements.

Proof of ID documents

In order to open a bank account, below listed documents are acceptable as proof of your ID:

  • Passport (Can be British or foreign passport), though it must have a Machine Readable Zone
  • Centrally issued EU and EEA national identity card with a Machine Readable Zone
  • UK Paper driving licencethat has your current address on it
  • Full UK or EU/EEA Photo card driving licence
  • Benefit entitlement letter (Not more than 12 months old, confirming benefit payable at time of issue)
  • UK Blue disabled driver’s pass that has your open on it
  • British Armed Forces identity card
  • Biometric residence permit
  • EU/EEA Driving Licence (European Union/European Economic Area)
  • Tax Notification document from HM Revenue & Customs within 12 months
  • Home Office Immigration Status Document/Application Registration Card
  • Northern Ireland Voters Card (Valid)
  • Student ID card (youth/student accounts only – NUS and Student Union cards not accepted)
  • An introduction from a parent or guardian who's an existing Barclays customer
  • Young Scot National Entitlement Card (NEC) - applicants under 18

Proof of current UK address documents

As you’re required to submit different proofs for identity and address verification purposes, below enclosed is the list of documents that are acceptable as address proof to open a new bank account at Barclays:

  • Full UK paper or photocard Driving Licence
  • EU/EEA Driving Licence
  • Other bank statement from last 3 months
  • UK Credit Card Statement
  • UK, EU, EEA mortgage statement
  • Council tax bill/demand letter/exemption certificate issued within 12 months
  • Tenancy agreement (dated within 12 months) from local council or housing association
  • UK utility bill (dated within 3 months) – gas, electricity, water, landline
  • UCAS Letter (student/graduate accounts only – less than 12 months old, showing offer of a place on a course in the current or next academic year)
  • Council rent book/card (showing a payment within past 12 months)
  • Benefit entitlement letter (less than 12 months old, confirming benefit payable at time of issue)
  • HMRC Tax Notification issued within 6 months
  • UK Credit Union Statement
  • An introduction from a parent or guardian who's an existing Barclays customer

Identification for student bank accounts

In case you are applying for a Student account i.e. Higher Education Account or Graduate Additions, you’re required to present one valid document for ID proof and one that has your current UK address on it. Below is the list of accepted proofs for student accounts:

Photocard national identity card Letter/bill from utility company (less than 3 months old, except for water bills and mobile phone bills.
Full UK paper driving licence TV Licence letter or Direct Debit schedule (less than 12 months old. The document needs to detail your name and address and confirm the existence of a TV Licence)
A full UK or foreign photocard driving licence Council Tax bill, payment book or exemption certificate (less than 12 months old)
UK Armed Forces ID card UK or foreign bank/credit card statement (less than 3 months old and not printed from the internet). Store card statements are not accepted
Student ID card – NUS & Student Union cards not accepted UCAS Letter (less than 12 months old, showing offer of a place on a course in the current or next academic year)
